AI Agents and Security: How to Protect the Next Generation of Intelligent Automations

In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) agents have evolved from mere technical experiments to key players in companies’ digital transformation. By automating complex workflows, integrating data from multiple sources, and autonomously interacting with systems and users, these agents now operate as digital collaborators across various sectors. But with increased adoption comes a growing concern: how can we ensure that such powerful agents don’t become new entry points for data leaks, fraud, and cyberattacks?


The rapid adoption of agents introduces new risk vectors. The combination of autonomy, access to sensitive data, and connection to multiple systems makes AI agents a new critical point in organizational security architecture.


As companies expand the use of generative AI in operational contexts, the risks of unintended data exposure and flawed automated decisions increase significantly.



New Risks, New Attack Surfaces

AI agents function as autonomous systems capable of observing the environment, planning actions, and executing tasks. To do so, they need access to APIs, databases, legacy systems, ERPs, CRMs, and other sensitive platforms. This interconnectivity exponentially increases the attack surface.

  1. Prompt Injection: Hackers insert malicious commands into seemingly harmless inputs to manipulate the agent’s behavior.

Unlike traditional applications, protecting AI agents requires thinking across multiple layers:


  1. Scope Reduction and Least Privilege Principle: Each agent should only access what’s strictly necessary for its function. This minimizes potential damage if compromised.


  2. Continuous Monitoring and Auditable Logs: Agents must be treated as operational entities. Their actions need to be logged, audited, and monitored in real time by security systems.


  3. Red Teaming and Adversarial Simulations: “Red teaming” — deliberately testing system limits with malicious scenarios — is recommended for continuous resilience validation.


  4. Prompt Validation and Output Filtering: Input and output data must go through security filters, including semantic analysis and checks for sensitive data leakage.


  5. Segregated Environments and Operational Sandboxes: Agents should operate in isolated environments, with intermediate layers for critical system interaction — like secure proxies, validated APIs, and circuit breakers.




Governance: Security Is Not Just Technical, It’s Organizational


In addition to technical safeguards, protecting agents requires an organizational approach. This includes:

People discussing cybersecurity strategy around a tactical table.
  • Creating an AI committee to define safe usage guidelines;

  • Inventory and classification of agents in operation and their access levels;

  • Ongoing team training on prompt engineering, risks, and best practices;

  • Clear policies for usage, monitoring, and revoking access for obsolete or experimental agents.

Organizations with clear AI governance are three times more likely to avoid security incidents in intelligent agent projects.



Secure AI Is Useful AI


AI agents are central to the digital future of enterprises — but they can’t be approached like passive tools. They are autonomous, dynamic assets with decision-making capabilities. And for that reason, they require a new mindset about security and governance.


The true scale of AI will only be possible when organizations align innovation with trust. And trust, in this context, begins with security by design.
